Eino Leino Day (Day of Poetry and Summer)
July 6 · Level 1 · #2069 of 2238
On 6 July Finland remembers the poet Eino Leino and toasts summer and poetry together. Leino was born on this day in 1878 and remains one of the best-loved Finnish poets.
How it is celebrated: poems are read aloud in libraries, parks and city squares, Leino's lines are heard on the radio, and many Finns fly the flag.
The poet was born Armas Einar Leopold Lönnbohm. He chose the name Eino Leino himself and published his collection Helkavirsiä under it in 1903.
