Russia Day is the country's main national holiday. It marks the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, and for many people it is also a welcome summer day off.
How it is celebrated: Moscow and other cities stage concerts, street festivals and open-air fairs, flags hang on the squares, and fireworks light up the evening sky. At the Kremlin, state prizes and awards are presented.
The declaration was adopted on 12 June 1990 at the First Congress of People's Deputies of the Russian republic, and the holiday has carried its current name since 2002.
