Ice Resurfacer Appreciation Day
January 16 · Level 6 · #1067 of 2238
Ice Resurfacer Appreciation Day honours the people who prepare and maintain skating rinks. Their work provides the smooth surface that hockey players and figure skaters need for practice and competition.
How it is celebrated: rink staff receive thanks from colleagues, athletes and skating communities. Stories about their work explain how rink ice is built up and repaired between sessions, giving a usually behind-the-scenes job some attention.
A resurfacing machine does more than spread water: it shaves away damaged surface ice and collects the shavings. The observance falls on the birthday of Frank Zamboni, creator of the well-known ice-resurfacing machine.
