Radio Day is the holiday of broadcasters, engineers, communications workers and amateur radio fans. It marks the day Alexander Popov demonstrated his radio receiver.
How it is celebrated: radio professionals get congratulations, stations air special programmes, hobbyists hold contests and exhibitions of vintage equipment, and schools and museums tell the story of radio.
Popov showed his device on 25 April 1895 by the old calendar, at a meeting of the Russian Physical-Chemical Society. That is 7 May in the modern calendar. The USSR made the holiday official in 1945.
