Constitution Day and Citizenship Day

Constitution Day and Citizenship Day commemorates the signing of the US Constitution in 1787 and recognises American citizenship. It is an opportunity to explore how government works and what citizens’ rights and responsibilities mean in everyday life.

How it is celebrated: schools and universities offer Constitution programmes, museums host related activities, and naturalisation ceremonies welcome new citizens. Public discussions connect the historic document with questions of civic participation today.

The Constitutional Convention had 55 participating delegates, but only 39 signed the finished Constitution. Taking part in the debate did not necessarily mean endorsing its outcome.
