Confucius's Birthday in China
September 28 · Level 5 · #1133 of 2238
This day honours Confucius, the thinker and teacher whose ideas shaped East Asian ideas about morality, learning and family for centuries. By tradition he was born in 551 BC.
How it is celebrated: in Qufu, the philosopher's hometown, ceremonies at the Confucius Temple bring together music, ritual dance and readings of classic texts. Schools and universities remind students how much a good teacher matters.
In Taiwan the same date is Teachers' Day, and solemn ceremonies are held at Confucian temples there too.
