Russian Navy Black Sea Fleet Day
May 13 · Level 9 · #229 of 2238
Russian Navy Black Sea Fleet Day honours the fleet's sailors and veterans and recalls its history. The occasion connects present-day naval service with maritime traditions that developed on the Black Sea from the eighteenth century onwards.
How it is celebrated: naval units hold ceremonial assemblies and recognise serving personnel. Commemorative programmes include wreath-laying, veterans' gatherings, concerts and museum events exploring the fleet's past.
The fleet traces its beginnings to the arrival of ships from the Azov Flotilla in Akhtiar Bay in 1783. Sevastopol subsequently developed there and became one of the fleet's principal historical bases.
