Portuguese Bullfighting Anniversary
August 14 · Level 9 · #358 of 2238
Some holiday calendars use this name for an occasion devoted to Portuguese bullfighting, or tourada. It introduces an arena tradition involving horsemanship and coordinated teamwork, alongside continuing debate about animal welfare.
How it is celebrated: enthusiasts attend performances featuring mounted riders and groups known as forcados. There is no single nationwide birthday ritual associated with this calendar entry; individual events follow local programmes.
In one distinctive part of a tourada, the forcados stop and restrain a bull without weapons. The leading participant meets the animal's charge, with teammates joining to help hold it.
