World Refrigeration Day
June 26 · Level 5 · #1285 of 2238
World Refrigeration Day celebrates the quiet cold that keeps the modern world running: milk in the shop, vaccines in clinics, servers in data centres. It falls on the birthday of Lord Kelvin.
How it is celebrated: engineers and companies host open lectures, webinars and site visits, and schools and colleges show students how a fridge or an air conditioner actually works.
William Thomson, later Lord Kelvin, was born on 26 June 1824. The kelvin unit of temperature carries his name, and absolute zero sits at 0 K, or −273.15 °C.
