World Press Freedom Day
May 3 · Level 9 · #321 of 2238
World Press Freedom Day highlights why journalists must be able to ask difficult questions and publish verified information without censorship or threats. It also stands with media workers whose reporting puts their freedom or lives at risk.
How it is celebrated: conferences, public discussions and campaigns support independent journalism. News organisations remember colleagues who have been killed and examine newsroom safety and public access to information.
The date honours the Windhoek Declaration, adopted by African journalists in Namibia in 1991. Their call for an independent press helped lay the groundwork for this worldwide observance.
