This is a day for fans of the pistachio, the nut that announces itself with a crack of its shell. A fine excuse to buy a bag and hold a tasting.
How it is celebrated: people snack on pistachios at home and at work, stir them into ice cream, desserts, salads and sauces, and try out new recipes.
The pistachio tree belongs to the same plant family as the cashew and the mango. When the fruit ripens, the shell splits open by itself with a small pop, and the green kernel gives many desserts their familiar colour.
