World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day celebrates the ocean's role in life on Earth and calls for healthier marine ecosystems. Even far from the coast, people depend on the sea for its influence on climate, its food resources and its extraordinary living diversity.

How it is celebrated: volunteers clean beaches, museums and aquariums run learning activities, and researchers share discoveries about marine life. Environmental campaigns focus on pollution and responsible use of ocean resources.

Roughly half of Earth's oxygen production comes from ocean organisms. Tiny algae and other photosynthetic plankton do a remarkable amount of that work without ever being visible from the beach.
