World Maritime Day
September 24 · Level 9 · #372 of 2238
World Maritime Day highlights how much everyday life depends on shipping. Led by the International Maritime Organization, it draws attention to safety at sea, the people who keep ships moving and the protection of the marine environment.
How it is celebrated: maritime organizations, colleges and industry associations hold conferences, talks and themed events. An annual theme gives participants a shared issue to explore.
The first celebration took place in 1978, thirty years after the convention establishing the International Maritime Organization was adopted.
