World Lion Day
August 10 · Level 9 · #365 of 2238
This day puts a spotlight on lions and on how far their numbers and range have shrunk. The "king of beasts" turns out to need a lot of help from people.
How it is celebrated: conservation groups and zoos run talks, fundraisers and family activities. Schoolchildren draw and paint lions, while field workers explain how villages and big cats can share the same land more safely.
Most wild lions live in Africa south of the Sahara, but a small population of Asiatic lions survives in the Gir Forest in the Indian state of Gujarat.
