World Lake Day
August 27 · Level 5 · #1264 of 2238

Lakes supply water, shelter wildlife and shape the places people call home. World Lake Day draws attention to these ecosystems and the pressures they face. Looking after a lake also means caring for the land and waterways that feed it.
How it is celebrated: environmental groups organise shoreline clean-ups, nature walks and activities about aquatic life. Community monitoring projects invite people to observe local water conditions and learn about pollution.
Not every lake has a river flowing out of it. In lakes without an outlet, dissolved salts can accumulate, making the water salty.
