World Kiswahili Language Day
July 7 · Level 4 · #1550 of 2238

World Kiswahili Language Day celebrates a language that connects people across East Africa and beyond. It highlights the role of Kiswahili, also known as Swahili, in education, literature and everyday conversations between communities.
How it is celebrated: language classes, poetry readings, discussions and cultural performances introduce people to the language. Learning a greeting or listening to a song offers an easy way to join in.
Swahili belongs to the Bantu language family, despite its many Arabic loanwords. Earlier writing traditions used Arabic script; today, the Latin alphabet is standard.
