World Hypnosis Day

World Hypnosis Day invites people to look at hypnosis as a practical tool used in therapy and medicine, not as a stage trick. It is a good moment to clear up the myths that films and variety shows have built around it.

How it is celebrated: practitioners give open talks and online sessions, explain what a real session feels like and answer sceptics' questions. Curious people try simple relaxation and focus exercises.

The word comes from the Greek hypnos, meaning sleep, yet a hypnotic state is not sleep at all. The term hypnotism was coined in the 1840s by the Scottish surgeon James Braid.
