World Braille Day

World Braille Day celebrates reading by touch and the right of blind people to access information independently. It falls on the birthday of Louis Braille, who developed the raised-dot writing system.

How it is celebrated: libraries and education groups introduce visitors to braille books, offer learning activities and demonstrate accessible technology. These events show how touch can open up a page of text.

Braille can carry a tune on paper, too: a dedicated music notation system lets musicians read and study scores with their fingertips.
