World Folklore Day

A day for the songs, tales, rituals and legends that people pass down from one generation to the next. It is a reminder that culture lives not only in museums but also in family stories.

How it is celebrated: communities hold folk festivals, music concerts, craft fairs and storytelling evenings. At home, it is a good moment to ask grandparents about old songs, sayings and family tales, and to write them down.

The word "folklore" was coined by the English antiquarian William Thoms, who proposed it in a letter to the journal The Athenaeum on 22 August 1846. That is why the day falls on 22 August.
