Day Commemorating Victims of Violence Based on Religion or Belief
August 22 · Level 8 · #657 of 2238

This UN day remembers people who were attacked or killed because of what they believe, or do not believe. It stands for everyone's right to hold a faith, change it or have none, without fear for their life.
How it is celebrated: communities organise memorial gatherings, interfaith meetings and public discussions. Schools and organisations talk about tolerance and human rights, and many people simply light a candle for the victims.
The UN resolution behind this day was brought forward by Poland, and it was first marked on 22 August 2019. It protects followers of every faith, as well as people with no religion at all.
