World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

This United Nations observance affirms older people’s rights to safety, dignity and independence. It draws attention to abuse and neglect that can remain hidden in private homes or be dismissed as an ordinary part of a relationship.

How it is celebrated: community organisations hold awareness events, while health and social care services train staff to recognise abuse. Public campaigns explain warning signs and point people towards support.

Abuse does not always leave a bruise. Taking someone’s pension, making threats or withholding essential care can also constitute elder abuse, which is why the day looks beyond physical violence.
