World Curlew Day

A day to celebrate curlews, the big wading birds with long, down-curved bills. Many curlew species are in decline, so the day draws attention to protecting the birds and the habitats they depend on.

How it is celebrated: birdwatchers head out with binoculars, count birds on meadows, moorland and marshes, and conservation groups run talks and activities for children. Plenty of people also draw curlews and share their pictures.

The Eurasian curlew is Europe's largest wader, and its bubbling, rising call is one of the classic sounds of spring on open moorland.
