World Book and Copyright Day
April 23 · Level 7 · #782 of 2238

Books can introduce us to a new world without asking us to leave our chair. UNESCO established this day in 1995 to encourage reading, support publishing and recognise authors' rights over their work.
How it is celebrated: libraries host readings and exhibitions, bookshops welcome writers, and readers share favourites. Events also explore the work behind a book and why copyright matters to its creators.
Shakespeare and Cervantes are often linked through their recorded death dates, but the calendars complicate the story. England and Spain used different calendars, so the writers did not die on the same actual day.
