World Bee Day
May 20 · Level 7 · #708 of 2238
World Bee Day draws attention to the pollinators that help sustain wild plants and food crops. Proposed by Slovenia and established by the United Nations, it encourages people to protect bees and the other animals that carry pollen between flowers.
How it is celebrated: beekeepers introduce visitors to apiary life, while schools and museums run activities about pollination. Planting bee-friendly flowers and learning how to protect habitats are practical ways to join in.
There are around 20,000 bee species worldwide, and most are solitary. The familiar honeybee colony is just one way of being a bee.
