Volga Day

Volga Day celebrates Europe's longest river and encourages people to care for its future. In Russia, it is an occasion to explore water quality, river habitats and the communities whose history and daily life are tied to the Volga.

How it is celebrated: volunteers clear litter from riverbanks, while museums and libraries organize exhibitions and learning activities. Environmental events explain how everyday choices affect the river's health.

The Volga's water has no natural outlet to the ocean. It flows into the enclosed Caspian Sea, which, despite its name, is the world's largest lake.
