World Chess Day
July 20 · Level 7 · #759 of 2238
World Chess Day is a United Nations observance celebrating a game that connects people across languages and cultures. It highlights chess as a shared space for learning, conversation and friendly competition, open to beginners as well as experienced players.
How it is celebrated: clubs organise tournaments, introductory lessons and simultaneous exhibitions. Players meet across a board or online, often helping someone new learn the moves.
The date marks FIDE’s founding in Paris in 1924. The UN recognised the day in 2019, long after the chess community had begun celebrating it.
