Tisha B'Av
July 23 · Level 6 · #987 of 2238

Tisha B'Av is a Jewish day of mourning for the destruction of the Jerusalem Temples and other tragedies in Jewish history. Its date follows the Hebrew calendar, so it falls on a different date in the civil calendar each year.
How it is celebrated: those observing the fast abstain from food and drink from sunset until nightfall the following day. Synagogue readings include Lamentations and mourning poems, with worshippers sitting on low seats or the floor for part of the day.
When the ninth of Av falls on Shabbat, the fast moves to Sunday, giving Sabbath observance precedence over public mourning.
