Shōwa Day
April 29 · Level 3 · #1768 of 2238

Shōwa Day is a Japanese public holiday for reflecting on the era of Emperor Hirohito. Its historical backdrop includes war, postwar rebuilding and the sweeping changes that shaped modern Japan.
How it is celebrated: people visit museums, historical exhibitions and places of remembrance. The holiday also begins Golden Week, a cluster of public holidays that gives many people an opportunity to travel, see relatives or spend time outdoors.
The same date has carried three holiday names: the Emperor's Birthday, Greenery Day and, since 2007, Shōwa Day. Greenery Day was not abolished; it moved to May.
