International Shark Awareness Day
July 14 · Level 10 · #201 of 2238

Sharks are ancient predators that keep ocean ecosystems in balance, yet many species are threatened with extinction. This day invites people to learn more about them and to swap fear for curiosity and care.
How it is celebrated: aquariums and science centres run tours and talks, marine biologists explain what sharks really do all day, and divers and volunteers back conservation projects. Kids draw, build models and put together shark puzzles.
A shark's skeleton is made of cartilage, the same flexible tissue as the tip of your nose. Sharks are also older than trees: their ancestors were swimming more than 400 million years ago.
