Currant Day
July 14 · Level 1 · #2200 of 2238

Currant Day is an informal summer celebration of a small fruit with plenty of kitchen possibilities. Black, red and white currants bring different flavours to everything from a handful of freshly picked berries to a jar of homemade jam.
How it is celebrated: people pick ripe fruit, bake currant pies, make jelly and fruit drinks, and share preserving recipes. Tasting a few varieties is an easy way to join in without a garden.
White currants are actually a variety of red currant with pale fruit, rather than a separate species. Their translucent berries make the family resemblance especially easy to spot.
