Public Domain Day

Every 1 January, works whose copyright term has run out join the public domain. Anyone can then publish, translate, adapt or remix them without asking permission or paying a fee.

How it is celebrated: libraries, archives and fans publish lists of the newly freed books, films and songs, upload digitised texts, and stage readings, remakes and mash-ups.

On 1 January 2019, works published in 1923 entered the public domain in the United States, the first such release in about two decades.
