Peru Independence Day
July 28 · Level 10 · #32 of 2238

Peru Independence Day marks the declaration of independence from Spain in 1821, announced by José de San Martín in Lima. It is an occasion for national ceremonies, family gatherings and celebrations that bring Peruvian culture into the streets.
How it is celebrated: red-and-white flags decorate towns and cities, concerts draw crowds, and families share favourite Peruvian dishes. The president addresses the nation, while Lima hosts a ceremonial Te Deum church service.
The national celebrations, known as Fiestas Patrias, span two days: 29 July follows Independence Day by honouring the armed forces and national police.
