International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

World Ozone Day celebrates the atmospheric shield that absorbs much of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. It recalls the Montreal Protocol, the agreement that brought countries together to phase out substances that damage this protective layer.

How it is celebrated: schools, museums and environmental organisations hold talks, exhibitions and activities about the atmosphere. They explain the chemistry behind ozone depletion and why international cooperation matters for protecting a shared environment.

The ozone hole is not an actual opening in the atmosphere. It is an area where ozone concentrations have fallen sharply: the air is still there, but its protection against ultraviolet radiation is weaker.
