N'Ko Alphabet Day

N'Ko is an alphabet for the Manding languages of West Africa, written from right to left. The day marks its creation and the right of Manding speakers to read and write in their own languages.

How it is celebrated: communities in Guinea, Mali and Côte d'Ivoire hold gatherings, readings, exhibitions and writing lessons, and learners of all ages show off their texts. Many events also run online.

The script was devised in 1949 by Solomana Kanté of Guinea, and "n'ko" itself means "I say" in the Manding languages.
