New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is the last evening of the year, when people look back, make wishes and welcome midnight together. For many, it is the most anticipated party night on the calendar.

How it is celebrated: families and friends gather for a festive meal, count down the final seconds and toast the new year under fireworks. In Spain, people eat twelve grapes, one with each chime of the clock, while in Scotland the night is called Hogmanay and ends with the song Auld Lang Syne.

The ball in New York's Times Square has been dropped on New Year's Eve since 1907, with crowds watching it come down.
