Mountain Day in Japan
August 11 · Level 6 · #1079 of 2238

Mountain Day is a Japanese public holiday inviting people to get to know the mountains and appreciate what they provide. Forests, water and mountain communities belong in the picture alongside the spectacular peaks.
How it is celebrated: people go walking or hiking, join conservation activities and attend local celebrations. An accessible nature trail can be as much a part of the day as a demanding climb.
Japan's mountains have held cultural significance for centuries, but their own national holiday is surprisingly young. Mountain Day was first observed in 2016.
