Day of Mobilization Against the Threat of Nuclear War
January 29 · Level 9 · #305 of 2238

This day reminds people and governments that the danger of nuclear war has not gone away. It calls for talks on arms control and for settling disputes peacefully.
How it is celebrated: lectures, public debates and information campaigns bring experts and activists together to discuss cutting nuclear arsenals and preventing an accidental catastrophe.
In 1983 the Soviet officer Stanislav Petrov judged a missile-launch warning to be a false alarm, and that call helped keep a dangerous moment from escalating. In 2017 the Nobel Peace Prize went to ICAN, a campaign working to ban nuclear weapons.
