Mechanical Pencil Day

An unofficial day for the pencil that never needs sharpening: its lead is pushed out with a click or a twist. It is a good excuse for neat sketches, drawings and notes.

How it is celebrated: fans dig out a favourite mechanical pencil and use it all day for drawing, drafting and note-taking. Collectors compare rare models, and everyone else may simply treat themselves to a fresh pack of leads.

In 1915 the Japanese inventor Tokuji Hayakawa created the Ever-Ready Sharp pencil, and he later founded the company now known as Sharp.
