King Tut Day

This day recalls one of the great moments in archaeology. On 4 November 1922, members of Howard Carter's team uncovered a step that led down to the tomb of the pharaoh Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings.

How it is celebrated: museums and history fans retell the story of the discovery, host talks and documentary screenings, and many people admire pictures of the famous golden mask.

Tutankhamun came to the throne as a child, at about nine years old, and died young. His tomb survived almost untouched, and it held thousands of objects.
