Day of the Capture of the Turkish Fortress of Izmail by Russian Troops
December 24 · Level 10 · #67 of 2238

This is one of Russia's Days of Military Glory. It recalls the storming of the fortress of Izmail in December 1790 by the troops of Alexander Suvorov during the Russo-Turkish war. The fortress on the Danube was thought to be impregnable.
How it is celebrated: people lay flowers at memorials, attend military-history lectures, schools hold lessons about courage, and army units gather for ceremonies.
The assault itself took place on 11 December in the old-style calendar, which is 22 December in the new one. The date of 24 December comes from converting it with the 13-day gap of the twentieth century.
