Israel Independence Day

Israel Independence Day marks the proclamation of the state in 1948. Its observance follows the Hebrew calendar, so its Gregorian date changes from year to year.

How it is celebrated: a torch-lighting ceremony on Mount Herzl accompanies concerts and public celebrations. Families and friends meet for picnics and barbecues, and national flags appear on buildings and along streets.

The celebration begins immediately after Memorial Day for fallen service members and victims of terrorism. That direct passage from mourning to celebration gives the holiday a distinctive emotional rhythm, placing remembrance alongside independence.
