International Tango Day
December 11 · Level 8 · #621 of 2238

International Tango Day celebrates the passionate dance born around the Río de la Plata. It gives tango lovers a reason to gather, dance and remember the masters of the genre.
How it is celebrated: cities host milongas, which are tango dance nights, along with free classes, concerts and street shows. Beginners put on their first dance shoes and learn a few simple steps.
The date is linked to the birthdays of two tango legends: the singer Carlos Gardel, by tradition, and the composer Julio De Caro. In 2009 tango joined UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage, nominated jointly by Argentina and Uruguay.
