International Day of Sign Languages

September 23 · Level 7 · #705 of 2238

International Day of Sign Languages

This day highlights sign languages as full languages in their own right and supports the rights of deaf people. Access to education and services begins with being able to communicate in a language you understand.

How it is celebrated: there are sign language lessons open to anyone, concerts and plays with deaf performers, and talks with interpreters. Schools and organisations share ideas for making everyday communication more accessible.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed the day in 2017, and the date points to the founding of the World Federation of the Deaf in 1951. There are around 300 different sign languages, and none of them is universal.
