The day falls on the birthday of Arthur Conan Doyle, who was born on 22 May 1859. Fans use it to toast the world's most famous detective and the writer who dreamed him up.
How it is celebrated: mystery lovers gather for readings, play detective games and dress up in tweed and deerstalker caps. Some visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum on Baker Street in London.
Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, and 221B Baker Street has become perhaps the most famous fictional address in the world.
