International Day of Action for Rivers

International Day of Action for Rivers brings together people defending rivers and the communities that depend on them. It draws attention to clean water, flowing ecosystems and the effects of dams on both wildlife and people living along river valleys.

How it is celebrated: local groups organise riverbank clean-ups, educational gatherings and public actions. Participants share the challenges facing their rivers and campaign for healthy ecosystems and community rights.

The initiative began in 1997 at an international meeting of people affected by dams in Curitiba, Brazil. Human experiences of river development helped launch this environmental observance.
