International Lasagna Day
July 29 · Level 5 · #1150 of 2238

A day for the layered Italian dish loved far beyond Italy. Lasagna is made for a crowd: one big dish feeds everybody at the table.
How it is celebrated: home cooks bake lasagna from a family recipe, and restaurants put it on special menus. Debates are friendly but fierce: Bolognese with béchamel, as in Emilia-Romagna, or a version with ricotta, as in Naples.
The name goes back to an ancient word for flat sheets of dough. The Romans called such pasta lagana, and the root is probably Greek.
