International Kiss a Ginger Day

This day invites everyone to show some warmth to the redheads in their life and to celebrate a hair colour that too often becomes the butt of jokes.

How it is celebrated: people give their ginger friends and relatives a kiss on the cheek, send them kind messages, or gather for a get-together in honour of fiery hair. The one rule is that everything is friendly and by mutual consent.

Natural red hair is rare: only about 1–2% of the world's people have it, yet in Scotland the share is roughly 13%. The colour comes from particular variants of the MC1R gene.
