January 12 · Level 10 · #30 of 2238

The Australian Open is one of tennis's four Grand Slam tournaments. Held in Melbourne, it brings leading players and fans together for a major sporting occasion in the middle of the Australian summer.
How it is celebrated: spectators attend matches, follow evening sessions and gather around big screens to watch the action. Fan areas add food, music and activities to the tennis, giving the grounds a festival atmosphere.
The tournament used to be played on grass. Its move to Melbourne Park in 1988 also brought a switch to hard courts, changing the playing surface as well as the address.
