International Hawaiian Pizza Day

This is a day for pizza topped with ham and pineapple, the combination that has split food lovers into two camps for decades. One side adores it, the other winces, which is exactly why nobody gets bored at the table.

How it is celebrated: people order a Hawaiian pie from their favourite pizzeria, bake one at home, or run a friendly taste test with a secret ballot for and against. The bold add bacon or hot peppers.

Hawaiian pizza was created in 1962 by Sam Panopoulos, a Greek-born restaurateur in Canada. He tried it out at his restaurant in Chatham, Ontario, so despite the name, the dish was born far from Hawaii.
