International Day of Clean Energy

This day makes the case that energy from the sun, wind and water should reach everyone, not just wealthy countries. The UN General Assembly created it to draw attention to a fair, affordable shift to clean energy.

How it is celebrated: conferences and open lectures take place, schools and companies run lessons on saving energy, and energy organisations present new solar and wind projects. Plenty of people simply switch off spare lights and count how much power usually goes to waste.

The date matches the anniversary of the International Renewable Energy Agency, which was founded on 26 January 2009.
